Rescue and Other Dog Resources

Following are some of the multitude of online resources available in connection both with dog rescue and with the health, behavioral and recreational needs of your dogs.  These resources primarily relate to the Triangle area of North Carolina:

Training

Quarry Dog Adventures (QDA) in Mebane, NC, operated by Luther Livermon and Karen Bley
Luther has been a life-saver for us with his more than 25 years of experience as a dog trainer.  We can’t sing his and QDA’s praises highly enough.  Luther has helped us transform a neurotic and unmanageable Zeke into a loving, well-adjusted companion.  He has also taught both us and Howie how to cope successfully with Howie’s deafness.  Be sure to check out the blog for QDA - it has lots of great pictures of a piece of heaven on earth for dogs!

Samantha Seal Cauthorn in Wake Forest, NC ([email protected])
Samantha is a caring, capable dog trainer.  She can also teach your dog to swim at Lap It Up!

Lap It Up
– “Swim Learn Play” in Durham, NC
Planned as a recreational water facility for dogs, Lap It Up successfully pulls together fabulous and fun opportunities for training, swimming and just plain enjoying life as a dog.

Rescue and Adoption

Petfinder is a nationwide matchmaker between potential adopters and needy animals.  It represents a significant percentage of rescue organizations and shelters across the country.

Hickman County Humane Society in Centerville, Tennessee
The rescue organization from which we
adopted our Saint Bernard/Australian Shepherd mix Beauregard.  I can’t say enough about the wonders they accomplish with volunteer only services, limited resources, and no physical shelter, no animal control and no governmental assistance.  They have a very high successful adoption rate, in part because they are open to adoptions outside of their area which is very poor and offers little local adoption potential.

Best Friends Pet Adoption in Cary, NC
The rescue organization from which we adopted our sweetheart mastiff mix Zeke.

Durham APS in Durham, NC

SPCA of Wake County in  Raleigh, NC

Paws4ever - "Adopt & Train" in Mebane, NC
Formerly the Animal Protection Society of Orange County, Paws4ever is a placement partner for animals transferred from county shelters, including Orange, Chatham and Caswell.  Its Learning Center provides the most affordable and comprehensive array of dog training in our area, and the sanctuary is home to a 3-acre dog park.

Pawfect Match Rescue & Rehabilitation in central North Carolina
The foster organization from which we adopted one of our wonderful dogs - Howie

North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Raleigh, NC
Five dogs later we can’t say enough good things about our experiences with the vet school – with cancer care; internal medicine; surgery and intensive care; and their excellent emergency services.

Veterinary Surgical Referral Practice (VSRP) in Cary, NC
After 4 successful orthopedic surgeries on our own dogs, we highly recommend VSRP for their high levels of expertise and care.

Bahama Road Veterinary Hospital north of Durham, NC
Our vets since 1988, Bahama Road Veterinary
Hospital is, in our opinion, the best private general veterinary practice in the Durham area.

Bull City Veterinary Hospital of Durham, NC
Owned and operated by Leilani Sabin, a 1993 graduate of North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine.  Located in downtown Durham, it provides general veterinary services for small animals along with acupuncture, Tui na, laser therapy and Chinese herbs.  Dr. Sabin worked wonders on Caspar, using acupuncture to make him more comfortable and mobile during the last months of his life.  She is currently supplementing with acupuncture our dog Effie's course of treatment by the vet school for a serious liver condition.  We recommend Dr. Sabin highly as a compassionate and skilled doggie acupuncturist and general veterinarian.

Check out stories of our own beloved dogs, many of whom were rescued through or have their training and health needs provided through organizations listed on this page.
